How it began

I started this project last year prompted by Alex Jones' idea of people becoming leaders in their community, ie; spreading the word. I quickly discovered that trying to get people to take an interest was an impossible task for me, and I was probably making the situation worse and alienating the people I care about. It then dawned on me that what I do best is make music and so the whole idea was born. Other factors that led me to this was the live 8 fiasco along with the G8 and the London Bombings etc... The final thing was that my brother was brutally murdered last July by 2 bored teenagers. As you can imagine this led me to completely re-evaluate what I was doing with my life and made me realise that I had to get back to music. I had been lost for quite a few years...

The Political Angle

There are many great people out there in the world who spend their time defending our freedom, trying to balance the propaganda. Alex Jones, Cythia McKinney and John Pilger are the three that I chose to use on this album, but there are many others out there doing just as great a job. I feel so much better that they are out there.

Making of the album

The album took 4 solid months to write and record throughout autumn 2005. There were a few experiments I made before that to get in the right mode for it which I may put up here on the site at some point. I just don't want them to detract from the finished album.

There is a lot of music out there which has speeches plonked on it, I am not really a fan of this kind of thing. That is not what I was trying to do here at all. The vocals that I chose were selected very carefully, and with many of them it was the personality and the 'human' angle that I was after. The music was then written and recorded with total respect to the vocals as a fellow band member.

Another aspect of the way I chose them was that I wanted to make an album which was musically good with a wide audience appeal. The idea behind this was so that the album would not just be preaching to the converted, it would allow people to become drawn into the issues over repeated listening, therefore helping to 'wake people up.' Getting those people to hear the album is another matter though...

The Music

Musically it was an experiment for me. For years now I have been mainly dealing with non-guitar based music such as Astral Pedestrian, CPS, and Subsonic HeadDub. I have been wanting to get back to some song writing for a few years and exploring where I started out musically before I veered into Dub etc... I have been listening to a lot of Sonic Youth & Klaus Dinger related stuff over the last few years, as well as other Krautrock such as early Kraftwerk + Can. I was interested to see how these influences would integrate into my existing music style. This project seemed ideal to explore this area without the usual self defined genre boxes an artist usually has to deal with. It also acted as preparation for the 'Stumble' album I have since recorded, as well as 'Shining' the latest Astral Pedestrian release.

The album was an improvised project and I allowed it to grow organically and tried to stay well away from over-production (which is something I mostly try to do with my music). I love Sonic Youth for that reason, the mistakes are left in, the live feel always comes first. You end up with music full of life and energy that sounds natural and un-pretentious.

There are also quite a few mp3s around at the various myspace pages and from the Astral Pedestrian website and No Fixed Abyss
